Interests · beyond the code

Off the keyboard, I read, train, shoot and grow.

Four things that shape how I think, how I show up and how I see the world, away from the editor.

The unexamined life is not worth living.

— Socrates

Code is only part of the story. Away from the keyboard, these four things shape how I think, how I show up and how I see the world.

Reading is how I learn from people I'll never get to meet. A good book compresses years of someone else's experience into a few evenings, and that's the best deal I know.

Philosophy, Stoicism especially, gives me better questions rather than easy answers: what's actually in my control, what really matters, and how to think clearly when everything gets noisy.

Ideas I keep coming back to

Marcus AureliusRoman emperor · Stoic
Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.
SenecaStoic philosopher
We suffer more often in imagination than in reality.
EpictetusStoic philosopher
Men are disturbed not by things, but by the views which they take of things.
Friedrich NietzschePhilosopher
He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.
Richard FeynmanPhysicist
The first principle is that you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool.
Albert CamusPhilosopher & writer
In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.

Fitness

Strength, stamina and a clear head, built one rep at a time.

Show up.Then do it again.
  • Strength
  • Endurance
  • Recovery

Training is the most honest feedback loop I know. There are no shortcuts or clever hacks, only showing up, putting in the reps and recovering well.

The same discipline carries straight back into how I build software: small, consistent effort compounds, and the days you don't feel like it are the ones that count the most.

  1. 01Consistency over intensity
  2. 02Progressive overload
  3. 03Recovery is part of training

The goal isn't a perfect streak. It's never missing twice.

Photography

Photography slows me down. It trains the same instinct good design does: deciding what belongs in the frame and, more importantly, what doesn't.

Personal Growth

Trying to be a slightly better version of myself than I was yesterday. Here's what that adds up to over a year.

Illustration: a seed grows 1% every day for a year. Roots spread first, then a sapling, then a full tree in bloom at sunrise. By day 365 it is 37.8 times what it started as (1.01 to the power of 365). A seed that gets 1% worse every day ends at 0.03 times (0.99 to the power of 365).

Day one. A tiny sprout and a promise to show up.

  • Ship before it feels ready.
  • Read a little, every day.
  • Train the body to steady the mind.
  • Write it down: ideas, mistakes, lessons.
  • Never miss twice.
